~ PROGRAM ~
Symphony No. 4 in F . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .William Boyce (1711-1779)
William Boyce was the most prominent and influential native-born English composer
of the eighteenth century. His so-called “symphonies” were originally overtures to
theatrical works. They were rescued from oblivion in 1928 by the musicologist
Constant Lambert, who recognized that they were “not only of great technical and
historical interest but have a vigor and charm rarely found together.”
Polychoral Mass in G. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . José de Nebra (1702-1768)
Spanish composer José de Nebra is best-known today as the father of Spanish opera
and zarzuela. Surprisingly, the only known surviving manuscript of his exciting
Polychoral Mass was discovered in 1995 in the archives of the Puebla (Mexico)
Cathedral by musicologist, professor, and native New Mexican Craig Russell.
Soloists: Cecilia Leitner, soprano; Deborah Domanski, mezzo-soprano; Tim Willson, tenor
Magnificat . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .Antony le Fleming (b. 1941)
Son of English composer Christopher le Fleming, Antony le Fleming studied music
and composition under Raymond Leppard, Herbert Howells, and Malcolm Arnold.
Over the past two decades he has produced works for string orchestra, piano and strings, and chamber choir, most of them in a style that has been called “unashamedly English Romantic.” His ravishing setting of the Magnificat was written for concert rather than liturgical use.
Monika Cosson, soprano soloist
Piano Concerto No. 2 in B-flat, Op. 19 . . . . . . . . . .Ludwig van Beethoven (1770-1827)
The B-flat Piano Concerto was an important display piece for the young Beethoven as he sought to establish himself as a concert pianist in Vienna. While the work is very much in the charming and gracious style of Mozart, it contains a sense of drama and contrast that foreshadow many of Beethoven's later works.
Peter Vinograde, piano soloist
